The 'DuPont Bright Ideas Eco Challenge (DBIEC),' is a science-based competition for university students in the UAE, organised in collaboration with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) and ALHOSN University.

This competition is a part of The DuPont Community Fund (DCF), which has been established to improve the quality of life and enhance the vitality of communities in which DuPont operates. DuPont has demonstrated a strong sense of community and social responsibility since the company was founded in 1802. Each year DuPont contributes to environmental and community programs and since 1990, DCF has supported nearly 500 projects worldwide. The DBIEC competition underlines global efforts to protect the environment and preserve its natural resources.

This initiative also supports the UAE Government's drive towards green-based programs and innovations in different sectors to foster long-term sustainable development. The competition aims to enhance youth awareness on environmental issues and solutions including energy efficiency, recycling, green initiatives, eco-friendly concepts and other innovations to aid global environmental campaign. Hartmut Reinke, Director, Turkey, Middle East & Africa, DuPont, said, "Environmental stewardship is one of our core values that underpin our vision at DuPont.

Today's youth will inherit a world that is very different from the one our parents and the generations before them lived in. As we are now besieged with many issues that threaten our environment and our natural resources, it is inevitable that our young generation will have to assume responsibility in addressing these challenges. DuPont's Bright Ideas Eco Challenge offers UAE university students the opportunity to become agents of change. We want them to think of ways to preserve of our environment and the community we live in." DBIEC is open to expatriate or UAE National individuals or groups of students who are currently enrolled in any UAE university.

The competition will run from March 11 - April 29, 2010 and will include one category that encompasses either ideas or implemented initiatives. 'Ideas' refers to the recommendation of an original idea or a concept that can be valuable to the environment or present an alternative viable solution to a current ecological concern. Submissions could range from a tool that helps to conserve energy, water, or natural resources, or a recycled product that would enable cost savings, energy and manpower. 'Initiatives' refers to programs that focus on environmental protection or preservation including tree planting activities, beach clean-up drives and recycling campaigns. Participating students and groups are required to submit a detailed report with other supporting materials. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of experts from DuPont, EEG, and ALHOSN University.

Three prizes, 1st prise AED 25,000, 2nd prize 18,000 and 3rd prize AED 10,000 will be awarded to the winners at an official ceremony scheduled later in the year at ALHOSN University in Abu Dhabi. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson, EEG, said, "Environmental awareness should be encouraged at a young age so that tomorrow's decision makers and industry leaders have a strong sense of responsibility towards the planet. We commend DuPont's Bright Ideas Eco Challenge for encouraging students to focus their creativity and passion towards solutions for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The younger generation should be made to feel that they are a very important part of unified efforts to solve today's environmental challenges."

Dr. Hamdi Sheibani, Provost and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences, ALHOSN University, said, "At our University we often remind our students that they should pursue local growth with a global vision. This competition sends out a very positive message that the youth can and should make a difference, not only for their communities but for the whole world as well. We would not be surprised if we eventually see one or more of the winning entries to the Bright Ideas Eco Challenge being implemented on a national, regional or even global scale."
ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based university dedicated to high-quality and value-based education, recently participated in a professional meeting hosted by the Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) at its headquarters in Decatur, Georgia, USA. SACS-COC is one of six regional accrediting agencies and accredits institutions of higher education in the US as well as international universities. Prof. Raymond Tennant, Head of ALHOSN’s Effectiveness and Accreditation Center, represented the university in a series of workshops held from April 22 to 23, 2010 covering the accreditation process and the proper assessment of institutional effectiveness and included institutions from US southern states as well as several international colleges and universities.

One workshop focused on the structure of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the concept of regional accreditation. It also included the COC accreditation process including steps for compliance with the standards as covered by the SACS publication ‘The Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement’.

A second workshop centered on the assessment of institutional effectiveness as a key to develop and improve academic and administrative programs. Participants shared the overall planning and evaluation cycles of their respective institutions and how these facilitate the achievement of the institution mission and goals. Specific examples of best practices were given to demonstrate methods that can be used to further develop institutional effectiveness.

“Our success as an educational institution relies significantly on the quality controls we employ. Accreditation and periodic assessments of our organizational effectiveness are crucial to ensure maintaining high levels of quality and performance that constitute our obligation to our students, their guardians, and our other stakeholders. Our representation in the SACS-COC workshops reflects our commitment to adopt world-class standards in all our processes, policies and standards,” said Prof. Tennant.

ALHOSN’s participation in the US event follows its hosting of a workshop on institutional effectiveness entitled ‘Internal Quality Assurance in Higher Education Institutions’ on April 17, 2010. The seminar was organized by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and facilitated by Prof. Hilary Winchester, Pro Vice Chancellor for Strategy & Planning at the University of South Australia.

ALHOSN University constantly engages in local, regional and global dialogues to improve the quality and delivery of its 11 undergraduate programs and 7 graduate programs. These programs are accredited by the CAA and are open to students of all nationalities.
ALHOSN University Vice Chancellor calls for more investments into education at Entrepreneurship 1st Symposium

Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni explains entrepreneurship’s role in higher education in the UAE

ALHOSN University Vice Chancellor and CEO Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni discussed the importance of investing in the education sector and encouraging entrepreneurship among students during a speech delivered on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi as part of the Entrepreneurship 1st Symposium.

Held under the theme ‘From U.A.E. to Washington D.C.: A New Beginning Realized,’ the Symposium was conducted parallel to the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship in Washington, D.C. in which around 250 successful entrepreneurs from more than 50 countries discussed ways to advance economic and social entrepreneurship and build networks and partnerships among stakeholders. This summit fulfills a pledge US President Barack Obama made during a visit to Cairo, Egypt last year that the US would hold a summit dedicated to strengthening ties between American business leaders, foundations and entrepreneurs and their counterparts in Muslim countries. In the UAE symposium, Prof. Sabouni joined 11 other distinguished speakers who spoke of topics ranging from entrepreneurship development through Public Private Partnerships to the enhancement of regional Small and Medium Enterprises.

In his speech, Prof. Sabouni talked about the economic and academic benefits of investing in higher education: The misconception that private universities are often associated with purely commercial enterprises; fail to account for the optimization in efficiency and quality control and assurance that are necessary for continued operations in an increasingly competitive environment. Self-dependent profitable academic intuitions, by default, must rely on efficient utilization of resources so that they can continue to produce academically rigorous programs for the students.”

“As the UAE continues to develop at such a rapid pace, investing in private education can be both economically sustainable and academically rewarding. Federal policies and regulations must continue to support both individual and corporate initiatives and foster a culture of innovative entrepreneurship in all sectors, especially in higher education,” he added.

This symposium was organized by Cisco Entrepreneur Institute and Knowledge Horizon in cooperation with the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and concluded with a live interactive broadcast using new Cisco technology for the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship in Washington, D.C.

ALHOSN’s 1st Annual iDesign Summit discusses Future of Interior Design Profession in the Region

ALHOSN University gathered leading industry professionals and members of academia to discuss the role of interior design in the UAE during its 1st Annual iDesign Summit held on April 27, 2010 at the university’s Male Campus.

ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based university dedicated to high-quality and value-based education, has been chosen to host Kettering University’s Oswald International Faculty Fellowship. Prof. Basem Alzahabi, professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Prof. David Strubler, associate professor of Business at Kettering University, Flint, Michigan in the United States, are visiting ALHOSN University from March 21 to March 26, 2010 to participate in a weeklong series of lectures and discussions related to their respective academic fields.

During their stay, the two distinguished professors will also meet with ALHOSN administration and faculty members to discuss opportunities for collaboration and partnership between the two universities, especially in the areas of student exchange programs, faculty member visits, and the sharing of ideas in engineering- and business-related academic programs. The visit is expected to foster closer relationships between higher educational institutions in the West and the East.

Professors Alzahabi and Strubler are recent recipients of the Oswald International Faculty Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded to Kettering faculty members with a passion to pursue international teaching and research opportunities. The Fellowship was established through a generous gift from Kettering alumnus and trustee Bob Oswald and his wife Marcy. The couple also support The Oswald International Student Fellowship program, which provides financial grants for travel and living expenses for 10 Kettering students involved in the university’s international exchange program for the spring and fall terms.

Professor Strubler will take the opportunity to study Arab and Islamic cultures, their business practices, and their possible interaction with the Western business world. Professor Alzahabi, on the other hand, will give different seminars from an international perspective and participate in special seminars. The hosting of the American educators provides an opportunity to share and exchange cultural values between the United States and UAE in an effort to bridge differences between Arab nations and the West, in line with the spirit of cooperation, friendship and understanding clearly defined by President Obama during his 2009 speech in Cairo, Egypt.

“The fellowship arrangement with Kettering University affirms ALHOSN’s commitment to exposing our students and faculty to international expertise. Our guest professors will provide us with valuable insights on their respective fields and how western practices can be aligned with the unique cultural, social and economic goals of the UAE and the entire Middle East. This initiative complements efforts to bring Muslim and Western countries closer together through peaceful dialogue and collaboration, especially in socially relevant fields such as education,” said Professor Abdul Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor and CEO, ALHOSN University.
